Is This Man Overweight?

Danny Cahill won Biggest Loser Season 8 recently.

He lost an amazing 239 pounds, going from a starting weight of 430 lbs to a finale weight of 191 lbs.

His BMI (Body Mass Index) incredibly went from 60.0 to 26.6

However, according to BMI (body mass index), he is still overweight. See the chart below:

BMI:
Normal (18.5 - 24.9 BMI)
Overweight (25 - 29.9 BMI)
Obese Class I (30 - 34.9 BMI)
Obese Class II (35 - 39.9 BMI)
Obese Class III (greater than 40 BMI)

Danny is 5' 11". BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight.

In my opinion, Danny is not overweight. What do you think?

nope. i don't think he's overweight either... i really don't like the BMI calculation, because it doesn't account for muscle... who decided that *that* number meant overweight. ugh.

Very interesting! I read a fabulous article a few months ago about how BMI is horribly outdated and the science behind it (of course I can't find a bookmark for it now, sorry). I think he has more muscle and skin than the average person, which would skew the numbers - looks good to me though!

Nope! My vote is NOT overweight. Sometimes it's best to not go by numbers but rather how you feel, your health, and overall fitness level. :)

I think BMI charts make way too many assumptions - like frame. some people have small frames, other have large frames. And the appropriate weight for someone's height needs to be based on that as well.

Anyway - he looks great and lost a lot of weight. so who cares what the bmi number is!!

I don't think so! I hate BMI..it doesn't take into account of muscle, etc. I think body fat % is a better indicator!

BMI is so antiquated, definitely not a good representation! He is for sure not overweight, he looks to be at a very healthy weight now. I'd be more curious to know what his body fat % went down to.

As a bigger fellow myself, I have a hate-hate relationship with BMI. It hates me (apparently) and I definitely don't like it. Dude is not overweight.

I agree with Shannon...body fat % would be a more accurate measurement. And I can't help but wonder about all that extra skin he must have, surely it's atleast 20+ lbs of skin...

Absolutely not. Overweight is just that over weight. If you are active, (no matter the sport) and healthy, that's what counts...not some mystical number.

That BMI thing is bogus, in my opinion.
