Looking for a July Race...

I am looking for a race to do sometime in July, preferably within a days drive of the midwest, and somewhere where I'm not going to die from heat exhaustion.   If anyone has suggestions, drop me a line.   I'd like to do another half, but really any distance is fine.  Just looking for a fun race/fun event for a family getaway this summer.

I ran twcie yesterday, two three milers, one in the morning and one in the evening.   The evening one wasn't really planned.  My wife had a meeting and my two boys and I were looking for something to do, so they grabbed their bikes and I grabbed my running shoes.  I couldn't keep up with them, but we had a lot of fun.  When we got back my son said "why are you so sweaty?"  Of course for them it was a leisurely bike ride.

Here is a website you might want to check out. It has all the regional (MO & KS) races for 2009: http://www.mararunning.org/2009%20Schedule.htm LOTS of stuff going on in July! :)

Sorry, I have no suggestions, but if there's a local road runner's club in your area they should have a calendar of events online that could help you search.

here are some i check out when i am in the hunt:
marathonguide.com - since most marathons have shorter races associated with them.
runnersworld.com - though not too helpful at times, at least in my region
coolrunning.com - same thing here, not the most inclusive

and i also agree with jess - local/area running clubs are a good source (you can do a search for area running clubs on usatf.org and/or rrca.org)

Very local is the Derby Firecracker 4 mile and 1 mile. It's a longstanding race held out in a park in Derby. Not a lot of distance but family friendly and early enough that the heat isn't too high.
Locals bake cookies galore for the post race and there's fresh watermelon for all. Very home-town fun. The local parade starts right after the race.

Hey, if you find some local July races will you post a list of them? I need a local July race because for some reason I thought it would be a fun idea to run at least 1 race a month for the entire year. It's not exactly easy when we don't have a ton of races in this area!!

You should be safe with any short distance that starts as early as possible. I know what you mean, though. Heat is the enemy!

I suggest the Jokers Wild half marathon in St Louis! It's put on by UltraMax, they put on the absolute BEST events EVER. Always a top notch production, and I have heard great things about this race.

I don't think Utah is a day's drive, but it'd sure make a good family trip to national parks: Bryce Canyon Half Marathon!
