Hammer It 5K Race Report --it was wet!

This was the race t-shirt...yes, that's a hammer and yes it's running....uh, yeah....

I was looking forward to this 5K race for two reasons. 1) the start/finish line was like 1/2 a mile from my house (I walked to it) and 2) I was pretty sure I was going to PR.

This was the first year for this race and it is sponsored by the local home builders in the area. I knew it would be a small race, and it was. There were maybe 100 runners, tops. I woke up and took my time getting around but then looked out the window---rain. Yep, it was rainy as could be, with no sign of letting up. So I prepared mentally for my first race in the rain.

Before the race I ran into my friend Chuck, as well as Fair Weathered Runner (who took 1st in her age group by the way--props!) but a few other people I thought might run were evidently kept away due to the rain.

I ran a pretty good race, although jumping over puddles periodically caused a few challenges, and there was one drainage ditch that you just had to run through, so I ended up with wet shoes/socks. I also felt about 4 pounds heavier from running in rain soaked clothing. It was also great running past my house at about the 2.5 mile mark, my wife and kids were in lawn chairs under umbrellas cheering me on, which was fun.

Anyway, I did PR ! (though not fast by many runners' standards) My previous PR was 27:24, and my main goal for this race was to break 27 minutes, which I did. Finish time: 26:40, which is about a 8:34 pace. Although I didn't age-group place, I ran pretty consistent and was glad to have broken 27 minutes. Now I can keep training and working to improve on that time.

warming up in the rain...

my friend Chuck...we share the same last name so everyone thinks we're related...

pre-race registration, everyone huddling under this shelter until right before the start

Just to show you how much it was raining, these are my boys playing in the rain right after the race....

Congrats on a PR, that's always a good feeling.

Non-related question. Did you ever do youth ministry on the west side of wichita?

It was a great run, was concerned about rain but turned out to be nice and cool. I was a alittle distraught about the double stroller and her partner side by side taking up whole side walk, i was afraid of passing them in the grass. I was finally able to pass them when we got off of hydraulic.
finished in good time and would definitley do this again. Great tshirts.

Just wanted to clarify the comments on the t-shirt. The logo was a contest that was won by a local Park City elementary school child -- he received a gift certificate as a prize. All proceeds of the run went to the Park City library (thank you to all the runners). This was the first run in Park City -- and it is planned to be an annual event (hopefully, with not as much rain next year). Just happen to know all of this because I'm the hubby of the race director (her first) -- watched 6 months of work go into an event that lasted a couple hours total. Much more relaxing when she is just a runner in these races.

That's a lot of rain!!

Congrats on the PR, I like how the hammer is running nails into the ground. funny, funny. You should have your kids each try and draw a better logo!

to azfan: ah, that makes sense on the shirt...and tell your wife i think she did an excellent job with the race...to have to deal with that kind of weather on your first event as director has to be tough, but it went off without a hitch...she is to be commended.....i really hope they do this run again next year, too, it was fun......

Congrats on the PR! I think running in warm rain is more pleasant than running in sweltering heat. Either way, good job!

Congrats on your PR!! Especially in the rain!! And that was a fun shirt! Elaine(Peace for the Journey) and I ran 4.5 in the pouring down rain last Tuesday! Mercy! Not fun, but we talked the whole time so I enjoyed it! The pics of your boys looks like what we tackled!

How did camp go--or is it this weekend? I found more hardened rice krispie treats in child#2's bathing suit pockets! That suit is about to be trashed! Swim meet tonight--and they're calling for more H2o!I know we've had a drought for the past 3 years... but!! Have a great week!!
Blessings!

Don't discount your accomplishments by comparing it to "others". A PR by 44 seconds!! Can't complain about that. I'm a firm believer that one person's PR could easily have been for more difficult and more of an achievement than another, faster runner's. GREAT RUN!
