Running Again

I did a test run over the weekend. It was my first run in about 2 months, and I wanted to test out my new custom orthotics to see how the foot held up.

One thing about orthotics. They are really hard plastic. For some reason I thought they would be softer, but they weren't.

I started running, went about 100 yards, and the hard plastic was really bugging me. Then I got and idea. What if I put my shoe insert (soft padding) over the custom orthotic? So, I stopped and did that, then walked around a little and immediately I could tell it felt better. So, I did a short run, just a one mile loop, and the foot felt great. I could tell that my conditioning has taken a hit though, and I need to work on getting back into shape. At least I can run again--woo-hoo.

It does take getting used to for sure. Be careful, make sure you follow the recommended break in period. Good time to start back up with Spring around the corner too. Good Luck

Are you sure you weren't just skipping out on running in the miserable winter :) just kidding. At least you have perfect weather to get back into it.

welcome back! glad the mile went well, time to rebuild - good thing the weather is better :)

i would've figured orthotics to be soft too, but kind of makes sense to put the padded-layer back on top.

Yay on getting out there to run again!

My 5-year-old son has orthotics in his shoes and though it took a little getting used to (his are hard plastic too) he doesn't even notice them now. Hope they help you!

I wear custom orthotics, have for two years. They are to give your foot the support you need to properly align your body. Wear them over the cushy insole. Usually I take the insole out of my shoes. You will get used to them and actually realize you feel weird without them. Wear thick running socks - I ALWAYS do. I never wear thin socks anymore. ;)
