I had my first "real" run in probably 4 months this week. It was my normal 3-mile route, which I usually cover in about 29 minutes. This week it took me 34 minutes. Yep, I'm out of shape. I feel like I am starting running again. I guess that's what 4 months of laziness will do to you. I was sucking wind, and I had terrible side and lower back cramps. I took multiple walk breaks to get through the run. It wasn't pretty, but at least I got it done. The one piece of good news is that my foot seemed to do just fine with the new inserts.
I know that I should have been keeping my conditioning up while I couldn't run --you know, strength training, aerobic activity, flexibility, etc---but the truth is, I just haven't mentally been in the mood for exercise. And not just because of my injury, either.... the weather here has been depressing, and it's been hard to get motivated to do any type of fitness.
I am hopeful that this "first run" will get me kick started mentally to get back into it again. I feel like it will. And, it won't hurt if the sun comes out this week either.
Side Note: My K-State Wildcats are in the Sweet Sixteen! Go Cats! Mel, sorry about your Zags.

Getting out there is half the battle. You'll get back in shape, I'm sure of it!
You WILL get your fitness back-it's going to feel a bit ugly at first but I bet you will be surprised at how things come along now that spring is trying to make a return.
And woooooooooooooooooooooooo! Goooooooo CATS! Oz, I have been looking everywhere online for the Frank Martin shirt (the one with his menacing face on the front) and can't find one. If you happen to see or locate one in KS, would you mind letting me know? I'm dying to get my hands on it...
you'll bounce back! just keep at it :) way to get out there.
My first runs after a three month injury break were brutal. I cycled and swan during that time, but they still were tough. I pushed and pushed through a few weeks of ugly running and I came back faster and stronger than before.
Don't Give up!
At least you're running pain free!!
Hey, everyone starts with the first step. You'll regain your fitness! You just need to take it slow and steady.
